At least four people are confirmed dead, 21 are critically injured in an accident involving a bus and a trailer plying Kampala-Gulu highway on Thursday afternoon. Scores also sustained minor injuries.
The tragedy occurred at Katugo Checkpoint near Nakasongola town when a Zawadi Bus registration number UBE 379Q had a head-on coalition with a trailer numbered UAQ 724L carrying crates of beers.
The trailer was heading to West Nile while the Zawadi Bus was destined for Kampala. The bus was estimated to have a maximum of 60 passengers on board by the time of the accident.
Savannah region police spokesperson ASP Ssemogerere adds that both vehicles swerved off the road and overturned killing at least three people on the spot including the drivers. Another victim dies en-route to the hospital. Their identities were still unknown by press time. It is said that rescuers have rushed the injured to Nakasongola Army Hospital while attempts to remove other bodies stuck in the wreckage were being made.
Kimera George, an eyewitness also blamed the accident on the bus driver who looked impatient and wanted to rush past before ascertaining whether the road ahead was clear. He also faulted him for overspeeding.
This is the third accident within a period of two weeks in Nakasongola and Luwero along the same Gulu-Kampala highway claiming at least nine lives.
According to Minister for Works and Transport Abraham Byandala the country loses sh800b per year in accidents. The Money is lost in the treatment of patients in hospitals, cost of investigation of the accidents, damage to vehicles and property among others.
