Gulu Health Center Workers Protest Over Lunch Allowance

News | The Northern Link UG | Over 60 health personnel from all 34 health Centers in Gulu district today went on a peaceful protest over delayed payment of their lunch houses.

The health workers from all 34 health centers in the district pitched camp at the District Health Officer demanding payment of their lunch allowance arrears of three months.

Efforts to speak to the health workers were futile as they were blocked by officials from speaking to the media.

The health workers are demanding between 220,000 -350,000 shillings per month depending on one’s salary scale.

Efforts to speak with the District Chief Administrative, Geoffrey Okaka, and LCV chairperson Opiyo Christopher Ateker refused to speak to the media saying it was an administrative issue.

Tom Oree-the Deputy Resident District Commissioner Gulu said he was shocked to find out that the workers had not been paid their lunch allowance.

He said his office has now directed the district accountants to ensure that the payments are done in 14 days adding that such delays affect service delivery.

The ministry of health revised rates of lunch allowance for health workers effective July 1, 2021, to 15,000 for those who had been earning 3,000 while those that were getting 2,000 are to get 10,000 shillings.
