Inadequate Health Facilities Breaks Service Delivery in Terego District

WEST NILE: Residents in Leju Town council have for over thirty years not witnessed better health services provided due to lack of facilities as the town council only has a health center two located in Otrevu parish.

Leju Town council which was curved from Aii-vu sub-county in 2020 with the commencement of Terego district has four wards Aripia, Otrevu, Alia, and Addu with over sixty-seven thousand people.

According to the residents, this has taken a negative twist with the changing disease pattern.

The Lc1 vice-chairperson Maraju cell in Addu ward George Abima says many of the locals die due to long distances as simple treatable diseases can not be eradicated.

“Travelling from Maraju cell to Obofia health center which is close to five to ten kilometers can not be easy for a sick person to travel coupled with lack of transport challenges.”

Meanwhile, one of the village health team members Emilio Drapari equally said due to inadequate drugs to serve the catchment population, many people have resorted to getting drugs from the Village Health Team members VHTs which are inadequate.

“We give drugs for children under five years with exception of the deworming tablets which are given once in a year for the adults”.

“Most of these drugs are donor aided and they come either once or twice and are not enough to serve the population but many of the sick people resort to going to private clinics.” Drapari added

However, efforts to get a comment from the town clerk Leju Town council by press time were futile as his known telephone number was unavailable.

But the LC3 chairperson elect for Leju Town council Nakuci John Bosco says the Town council deserves a new health facility.

“The Town council deserves another health facility of stage four status that is able to accommodate a doctor and with better equipment to serve the population better”.

The Town Council is served by Obofia health center two as the only government health facility and Aripea health center three as the greatest health facility which is private.
