The locals of Arua have complained to the minister of land Betty Olive Kamya about the unfair treatment being accorded to them whenever they visit the office to get information and process land titles.
During the Baraza meeting organized by the minister at Arua Police ground on Wednesday afternoon, the vice-chairperson Arua District Alioni Boniface accused the Maracha District planner who has been seconded to the zonal land office West Nile region located in Arua City of extorting money from the locals who go to them to get their land registered and issued with the titles. This raised the eye-brow of the minister and tasked Bako Joyce one of the officers who represented the zonal land offices to explained.
In her explanation, she distanced herself from the allegations where she said she is still one month old in the office in which she can not give more information.
“Am only one month old in the office honourable minister. The right perosn would be the District planner unfortunately she is sick and admitted at pioneer hospital.”
With members of the public not aware of how much one is supposed to pay, the minister was able to task her to give the real amount of money one is supposed to pay in order to secure the land title and how long it takes.
In response Bako said, they charge 50000 for customary land certificate while for leasehold title one has to pay 70,000 in which this money I’d paid to the bank however for a surveyor to survey one’s land, you meet your own costs.
Therefore, the minister directed the zonal land officer to display their services and the cost for the members of the public to so that they can not be corrupted by the vultures in their offices.
